CHAPTER 13

Amanda nibbled on her fingernail and studied Jake’s strong profile. A hint of five o’ clock shadow darkened his square jaw, despite the early hour. He’d texted earlier that morning suggesting they go for a hike down at Torrey Pines State Reserve to assess her lower body strength and begin his part of their bargain. He’d insisted on driving so she didn’t have to be concerned with her shoulder. Who was she to argue, even though she’d driven herself to the beach the prior day? Gazing at him instead of focusing on the road certainly wasn’t a hardship.

Although she could run for miles and had excellent endurance, her stability obviously needed work. Just ask Cowgirl. More than improving her physical strength, she’d been unable to resist spending more time with Jake. He was easy to hang out with and a friendship was growing between them.

The more time they spent together fulfilling their bargain, the more apparent it would become how they could have the best of both worlds. She wanted to have fun and wasn’t looking for long-term, especially with someone with a dangerous career. He had a full plate with work and school, but even the busiest guys would jump at the chance for no-strings sex, right?

Jake Cruz was fully capable of studying, doing well in school, succeeding at his job, and spending time with her. She was sure of it and she’d make it her mission to show him. It would take several sessions of tutoring and personal training to fulfill their bargain. And she did need to get stronger.

Her gaze dropped to where his long tanned fingers lightly gripped the truck’s steering wheel. His eyes were hidden behind aviator sunglasses. He was so handsome and those sinewy forearms begged to be touched. To be safe, she swung her gaze out the window and drank in the rugged California coastline as they cruised down the large hill toward the Torrey Pines State Reserve. She’d never tire of this gorgeous coastline and once again she questioned why she hadn’t spent more time at the beach when it was so close by. Unlike the bright sun and brilliant blue sky just a few miles inland at the ranch, clouds streaked along the horizon like a pastel watercolor. The marine layer drifted up from the chilly Pacific and temperatures along the coast tended to be cooler. Although the beach was less than ten miles from Pacific Vista Ranch, Amanda felt like she was spreading her wings in a whole new world.

“There’s a spot. Right up there. Hurry.” Amanda pointed toward a silver Prius with its turn signal flashing. Parking was notoriously tough on this stretch of Highway 101 and if you saw an opening, you swooped in fast.

“Score.” Jake expertly maneuvered the truck into the spot.

“Nice parking job.” Did he drive the fire engine too? Suddenly Amanda wanted to see Jake in his navy work uniform. Well, maybe just the pants portion. Her cheeks flushed. She was no better than
